If the number of churches is anything to go by, religion in Iceland is going strong. Driving through the country, churches, like waterfalls, pop up on the horizon when you least expect it. There are many modern churches in Iceland, but in the "middle of nowhere" they tend to be the old wooden ones, with bright painted roofs giving a speck of vivid colour in the midst of all the green and brown. Hard to know if it's the church itself or the space around it that strikes you so much.
Many churches are poised on a hilltop. Somewhere to take shelter or just a spiritual reference point?

The roof of the church at Stykkishólmur looks like fish scales.

The Viðey island church dates back to the 18th century.

The only black one we've seen so far, this church was lost on a hill somewhere in the Snæfellsnes peninsula.
I particularly like the first and last photos of the churches.
